Privacy Policy for moScanner
Last updated: June 30, 2026
This privacy policy explains how moScanner ("we", "our", or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our barcode scanning companion application.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Product Data
- Product Information: Product names, barcodes, prices, stock levels, brands, categories, suppliers, and other product-related fields synced from moPos
- Barcode Scans: Barcode values captured through the device camera for product lookup and data entry
1.2 Device Information
- Device model and operating system version (for compatibility)
- App version and crash reports (for improvement purposes)
- Install Identifier: A randomly generated unique ID created on first launch. This is used to identify crash logs per install instance and does not contain any personal or device-identifying information
1.3 Camera
- The camera is used solely for barcode scanning. No images, videos, or visual data are stored, saved, or transmitted. All scanning is processed locally on your device in real-time
2. How We Use Your Information
- Barcode Scanning: Scan product barcodes to quickly find, add, or edit products in moPos
- Product Management: Add new products or update existing product details directly from your mobile device
- Scanner Mode: Forward scanned barcodes to moPos for use on the POS terminal or management dashboard
- Data Synchronization: Sync product changes with moPos via local WiFi or optional Firebase cloud
- Crash Reporting: Save crash logs to help diagnose and fix app issues
3. Data Storage
3.1 Local Storage
Product data and configuration settings are stored locally on your device in JSON format. This includes synced products, pending changes, and app preferences
3.2 Cloud Storage (Optional)
If your moPos setup uses Firebase synchronization, moScanner connects directly to Google Firebase to send product changes and poll for updates from other devices. This operates independently of moPos — moScanner communicates with Firebase using the same credentials configured in moPos
3.3 Crash Logs
Crash logs are stored in your device's Documents folder under Documents/moScanner/crash_log_[id].txt. These logs contain technical error information and do not include personal or business data. You can safely delete these files at any time
4. Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or share your data with third parties. All communication is between moScanner and your moPos instance:
- Local WiFi: Product data is transmitted over your local network between moScanner and moPos
- Firebase (Optional): If enabled, data syncs through Google's Firebase platform, governed by Google's privacy policy
5. Data Security
- Pairing: moScanner pairs with moPos via encrypted QR codes. The pairing key is never transmitted in plain text
- Local data is stored in your device's private app storage, inaccessible to other apps
- Network communication over local WiFi is through direct socket connections on your private network
- Install ID is randomly generated and used solely for crash log identification. It cannot be used to identify individuals or devices
6. User Control and Rights
You have full control over your data:
- View: All synced product data is viewable through the app
- Edit/Delete: Products can be edited or deleted directly from moScanner
- Factory Reset: The Settings menu provides a reset option that erases all local data and requires re-pairing
- Crash Logs: Crash log files can be viewed and manually deleted from your device's Documents folder
- Uninstall: Uninstalling the app removes all local data. The Documents/moScanner folder may remain and can be manually deleted
7. Permissions We Request
- Camera: For barcode scanning only. No images are stored or transmitted
- Flashlight: To illuminate barcodes in low-light conditions during scanning
- Internet: For local WiFi communication with moPos
- Network State: To detect WiFi connectivity for pairing and sync
- WiFi Multicast: For discovering moPos on your local network
- Storage: For saving crash logs to your device's Documents folder
- Vibrate: For haptic feedback during barcode scanning
8. Children's Privacy
moScanner is a business application intended for use by adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected in the app and on this page
10. Third-Party Services
moScanner integrates with the following third-party services:
- Google Firebase: Firebase Privacy Policy (only if enabled through moPos)
- pyzbar: Open-source barcode scanning library used for decoding barcodes from camera input. No data is shared with this library's developers
